Often enjoyed as part of a hearty meal, it represents the comfort of homemade bread in British culture. Today, it is a staple in many households and can be found in bakeries across the UK, often served with butter or used for sandwiches.

Whole wheat flour adds fiber and nutrients, while all-purpose flour is more economical.

Combine 500 g bread flour and 500 g all-purpose flour in a stand mixer bowl.
Add salt and yeast (keeping them separate initially).
Pour in oil and water.
Mix with a dough hook for 8 minutes until combined.
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead by hand for a couple of minutes due to tackiness.
Cover the dough and let it rise for about 1.5 hours until doubled in size.
Divide the dough into two equal portions.
Shape each portion into an oblong loaf and nip the seams together.
Place the shaped loaves seam side down on a lined baking tray.
Cover the loaves and let them rise for another hour.
Preheat the oven to 220°C (428°F) with a tray of water inside for steam.
Dust the loaves with flour and slash the tops with a baker's lame or knife.
Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped.
Remove from the oven and let cool before slicing.
