Caramelize 1.5 cups sugar in a pan.
Add 1/2 can of coconut milk and 4 cups of coconut flakes to the caramelized sugar and mix well. Remove from heat to cool.
In a bowl, combine 1 cup of warm milk with 4 tablespoons of sugar and stir.
Add 2 teaspoons of active dry yeast to the warm milk mixture and let it sit for 5 minutes to activate.
Add 1 egg, 1 tablespoon of oil, and mix well.
Stir in 3 cups of flour and 1/2 teaspoon of salt until combined.
Knead the dough on a surface for 10-12 minutes until elastic.
Let the dough rise for 1 hour and 15 minutes until doubled in size.
Shape the dough into balls and let them rise for 5 minutes.
Press the dough balls and add the coconut filling.
Steam the buns for 15 minutes to cook the inside.
Fry the steamed buns until golden brown.
