Heat water to approximately 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit).
Add 1 teaspoon of sugar to the warm water and dissolve it.
Add yeast to the water and whisk it in, allowing it to sit for 10 minutes to activate.

Add the yeast mixture to the flour and mix until combined.
Use a stand mixer on the slowest speed to gradually add flour, then increase to second speed and knead for 10 minutes until smooth and slightly sticky.
Grease a bowl with 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil.
Turn out the dough onto a floured surface, dust the top with flour, and form it into a ball.
Place the dough in the greased bowl top side down, cover with a shower cap, and proof in a warm spot for 1 hour until doubled in size.
Scrape the dough out onto a floured surface and dust the top with flour, then knock it back.
Divide the dough into 6 equal pieces (or 8 if preferred) using a digital scale for accuracy.
Pre-shape the rolls by rolling them lightly into an oval shape and transfer to a greased baking tray with space between each roll.
Dust the rolls with flour, cover with a lightweight cloth, and allow to proof for 20 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius (390 Fahrenheit) and place a pan of hot water in the oven for steam.
Score the tops of the rolls with a baker's lame or blade before placing them in the oven.
Bake the rolls for 16 minutes, then remove from the oven.
