Cultural Context

Chalupas, originating from Puebla, Mexico, are a traditional dish that showcases the simplicity and flavor of Mexican cuisine. They are often enjoyed as a street food snack or as a hearty meal, typically topped with various ingredients like beans, cheese, and fresh vegetables. In modern times, chalupas have gained popularity beyond Mexico, with variations appearing in Tex-Mex cuisine and other regions, adapting to local tastes while retaining their core essence.

1

Take a wide bowl, add all the dry ingredients and melted butter, and mix.

2

Slowly add milk little by little to make a semi-tight dough.

3

Add 1 tsp of oil and spread it on top to prevent drying.

4

Cover the dough with a clean towel for 30 minutes.

5

Punch the dough and divide it into equal size balls and roll to a semi-thick disc.

6

Heat oil and slowly slide the dough into the hot oil and deep fry until light brown on all sides.

7

Remove it on kitchen paper and while still hot, fold it into half to stuff the filling.

8

Drain the water from the beans, mash them well, and add hot sauce, little salt, and cumin powder, mixing it well.

9

Take a chalupa, fill it up with some mashed beans, then add chopped onion, tomato, bell pepper, top with sour cream, and lastly add lettuce and cheese.
