Cultural Context

Originating from El Salvador, pupusas are a traditional dish made from corn masa and filled with various ingredients, including loroco, a local edible flower. They are often enjoyed with a side of curtido, a fermented cabbage slaw, and tomato sauce. Pupusas are a staple of Salvadoran cuisine and are celebrated during festivals and family gatherings, reflecting the country's rich culinary heritage. Today, pupusas have gained popularity beyond El Salvador, with variations appearing in neighboring countries and among Salvadoran communities worldwide.

5

Place a spoonful of loroco and cheese in the center of each disc.

Fold the edges of the dough over the filling and seal tightly.

7

Gently flatten the filled pupusa again to form a thick disc.

Prepare curtido by mixing shredded cabbage, carrots, onion, vinegar, salt, and oregano in a bowl.
