Pour 80g (6 tbsp) milk into a small saucepan and warm slightly.
In a bowl, crumble the yeast and mix with 1 tbsp of sugar and the warm milk.
Let the yeast mixture rest for 15 minutes.
In a medium bowl, add flour and make a well in the center.
Pour the yeast mixture into the well and cover with a towel to rest for 15 minutes.
Add butter, egg, remaining sugar, and milk to the flour and mix.
Knead the dough for at least 10 minutes until soft and combined.
Cover the bowl and let the dough rise until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
Divide the dough into three equal parts and roll each into a strand.
Braid the strands together and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Cover and let rise again for about 30-45 minutes.
Brush with egg wash before baking.
Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
