Stick Bread, or Stockbrot, has its roots in German camping traditions, where families gather around a fire to bake bread on sticks. This communal activity fosters connection and enjoyment of the outdoors. Today, it's a popular treat at festivals and gatherings, enjoyed by people of all ages, often paired with sweet or savory toppings.

Dried herbs are convenient and have a long shelf life.
Put the flour into a large bowl, add the sugar and some of the milk.
Sprinkle the yeast on top of the milk, mix in slightly and let activate.
Add the remaining milk and start kneading the dough.
When the dough starts to come together, add the salt and the oil.
Knead for about 8 minutes.
Optional: Add some garlic and/or herbs to the dough and mix it in for one to two minutes.
Cover the dough and let it rest for about an hour or until it has about doubled in size.
Divide the dough into 6 portions and shape each portion into a long string.
If the dough doesn't keep the shape, let it rest for 5 minutes and try again.
Wrap each string around the end of a branch, long enough to keep a good distance to the fire.
Over a campfire or firepit, bake the bread while turning the stick to make sure it is baked from all sides.
The stick bread is ready when the crust is nice evenly brown and the dough is no longer moist.
