Salisbury steak originated in the United States in the 19th century, named after Dr. James Salisbury, who advocated for a meat-heavy diet. Traditionally served with gravy, it became a staple of American comfort food, often associated with family meals. Today, variations abound, but the slow cooker method has gained popularity for its convenience and rich flavor.

Ingredients

  • ground beef
  • onion
  • mushrooms
  • beef broth
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • bread crumbs
  • egg
  • garlic powder
  • onion powder
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • cornstarch
  • water
  • parsley

Instructions

  1. 1Mix ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper in a bowl until combined.
  2. 2Form the mixture into patties, about 1 inch thick.
  3. 3Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and sear the patties until browned on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  4. 4Transfer the browned patties to a slow cooker.
  5. 5In the same skillet, sauté sliced onions and mushrooms until softened, about 5 minutes.
  6. 6Add Worcestershire sauce and beef broth to the skillet, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom.
  7. 7Pour the mixture over the patties in the slow cooker.
  8. 8Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours until the patties are cooked through.
  9. 9In a small bowl, mix cornstarch with water to create a slurry.
  10. 10Stir the slurry into the slow cooker during the last 30 minutes of cooking to thicken the sauce.
  11. 11Garnish with chopped parsley before serving.
