Heat 1 cup of water in the microwave for about 1.5 minutes until hot enough to dissolve sugar.

Add 1 heaping cup of granulated sugar to the hot water and stir until dissolved.

Top off the mixture with regular cold tap water to make a total of 5 cups (1 cup sugar + 4 cups water).

Stir the mixture to combine the sugar syrup with the cold water.

Pour about half of the mixture into a hummingbird feeder, leaving some for a second feeder.

Screw the base onto the hummingbird feeder after filling it.

Wash out the second hummingbird feeder with warm water before refilling it.

Fill the second feeder with the remaining hummingbird food mixture.

Use duct tape or gorilla tape on the shepherd's hook to create a sticky barrier to prevent ants from climbing to the feeders.

Hang the filled hummingbird feeders outside.
