Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. 2In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. 3Add the softened butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and buttermilk to the dry ingredients. Mix until well combined.
  4. 4Gradually add the boiling water to the batter, mixing until smooth. The batter will be thin.
  5. 5Fold in the chocolate chips until evenly distributed.
  6. 6Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
  7. 7Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. 8Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  9. 9For the ganache, heat the heavy cream in a small saucepan until just boiling. Pour over the chocolate chips in a bowl and let sit for 5 minutes, then stir until smooth.
  10. 10Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of ganache on top. Place the second layer on top and cover the entire cake with the remaining ganache.
  11. 11Dust the top with powdered sugar before serving.
