As we're not too familiar with Ukrainian cuisine many of these dishes we're sampling for the first time and it is really exciting to be trying something new. The Katyusha restaurant (Катюша) had a really quirky retro vibe with decorations from the 70s and 80s including old cameras, televisions and video game consoles. The Ukrainian meal itself was delicious and considering we ordered a lot of food it didn't cost that much. The five Ukrainian dishes we ended up ordering are as follows: 1) Borscht (борщ) Ukrainian Soup 2) Olivier Salad (салат "Оливье) 3) Deruny (деруни) Ukrainian Potato Pancakes 4) Varenyky (Вареники) Ukrainian Dumplings 5) Medovik (Медовик) Ukrainian Cake Katyusha restaurant (Катюша) location in Kiev, Ukraine: Varenychna "Katyusha" (Варенична Катюша) Ukrainian Restaurant Khreschatyk St, 29/1, Kyiv, Ukraine, 02000 katysha.com.ua +380 44 235 9335 Daily: 8AM–12AM 🥟🇺🇦 Tasting Ukrainian Food for the First Time! | Katyusha Restaurant Kiev | Affordable Eats & Classic Dishes ❄️ Introduction: A Chilly Day, A Hearty Ukrainian Meal Welcome to a chilly summer day in Kiev (Kyiv, Україна)! Today, we’re diving headfirst into Ukrainian cuisine at Katyusha (Катюша), a quirky retro restaurant that instantly transports you to the 70s and 80s. With old TVs, vintage consoles, and unique decor, this place is as much about atmosphere as it is about food. We sampled a variety of classic Ukrainian dishes, most for the first time, making this video a must-watch for foodies and travelers! 🍲 Starters: Borscht & Bread Rolls First up: the legendary Borscht (борщ). Traditionally beet-based, ours was a hearty cabbage version packed with potatoes, tender meat, and dill—perfect for a chilly day. Accompanied by two soft bread rolls and sides of sour cream, olive oil, and dill, the real game-changer was adding a dollop of sour cream straight into the soup. The flavors went from great to phenomenal—Sam-approved! 🥗 Salad: Olivier (Оливковий салат) No Ukrainian meal is complete without a classic Olivier Salad. This colorful mix featured eggs, carrots, peas, and diced ham, all coated in a creamy mayonnaise dressing. Reminiscent of potato salad but with extra flair, it’s rich, satisfying, and perfect for those looking for a high-calorie treat on a cold day. 🥔 Mains: Potato Pancakes (Деруни) & Varenyky (Вареники) Potato Pancakes (Deruny): These mushy, pan-fried pancakes are made from shredded potato and battered dough—comfort food at its best! Hearty, slightly oily, and delicious with sour cream, they’re the ideal winter warmer. Varenyky (Pyrohy): Ukrainian dumplings similar to Polish pierogi, ours were filled with mushrooms and cabbage, topped with caramelized onions. Bite-sized, greasy, and bursting with flavor, these dumplings are dangerously addictive and available either boiled or baked for extra variety. 🍰 Dessert: Medovik Honey Cake (Медовик) We wrapped up the meal with Medovik, a traditional layered honey cake with cream between every thin pancake layer, topped with crushed nuts and served with vanilla ice cream. Decadent and sweet, it brought back memories of similar desserts from Central Asia. The in-house dessert display proves Katyusha takes its sweets seriously! 🍽️ Value & Experience: Retro Vibes and Affordable Feasts Ambiance: Katyusha charms with its retro décor, funky antiques, and a warm, welcoming vibe. Variety: We ordered five dishes (including dessert) and drinks, sampling an eclectic range of Ukrainian flavors in one meal. Affordability: The grand total for everything? Just ₴349 UAH (~$13.71 USD) for a feast that left us stuffed. That’s unbeatable value for two people, each with their own salads and drinks! 💸 Why Try Katyusha? If you’re looking to explore Ukrainian food in Kiev without breaking the bank, Katyusha is a top pick. The portions are generous, the flavors are authentic, and the setting is both nostalgic and fun. Perfect for first-time visitors, food adventurers, or anyone wanting to discover the comfort and variety of Ukrainian cuisine. 📣 Join the Conversation!
